THE LIFE OF THE HBCU AND THE CONCERNS OF THE AFRICAN       AMERICAN COMMUNITY (Condensed Version)

THE FOUNDATION OF HBCU’s
The first HBCU, Cheney University in Pennsylvania, was founded in 1837.[1] Since then, Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have continued to offer culture, a rich history and a rigorous academic program.[2] HBCUs have been a part of the African American community for decades and will always be a part of the foundation for African Americans success.[3]  At one point, the only source of higher education for African Americans was HBCUs.  Then in 1965, Title III of the Higher Education Act of 1965 officially defined an HBCU as a school of higher learning.[4]  Currently, there are 106 HBCUs across the nation.[5]   The Thurgood Marshall Fund site states that “Today, HBCUS remain one of the surest ways for an African American, or student of any race, to receive a quality education.”[6]
HBCUs graduate nearly 20 percent of African Americans that have undergraduate degrees.[7] Research also shows that HBCU institutions graduate more than 50 percent of African American professional and public school teachers.[8]  Another great thing about HBCUs is that they do not discriminate against other races.  Not only do they help so many African Americans, but HBCU’s have also provided a significant percentage of non-African American student populations from Asian to International students.[9]   Several HBCUs in the past decades have emerged as selective, modern, well governed, and sustainable schools.[10] HBCU’s attract high quality applicants, while producing well-educated and fully prepared graduates.[11]
CAN HBCU’S COMPETE
A professor by the name of Richard America from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., wrote an article offering strategies on how HBCU’s can compete in today’s world of higher education.[12]  In this article he suggested things like HBCU’s should seek to rise in rankings to the next highest tier by 2030.[13]  Mr. America says that the HBCU should identify the SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) of two aspirational schools in the next higher tier and emulate them, and make one department and build a strong core of faculty to make that department truly outstanding.[14]  He also suggested making standards for sororities and fraternities and similar groups that create an academic and ethos environment, and that the HBCU should eliminate the rap and hip-hop mentality that these groups are being led by.[15]  He felt that sororities and fraternities have been destructive and anti-intellectual forces on campuses.[16]
I really believe that this strategy would hinder a lot of the HBCU’s mission statements.  I also disagree with him when it comes to his outlook on fraternities and sororities.  Fraternities and sororities were made for community service purposes, along with providing a brother and sisterhood beyond the education setting.  Fraternities and Sororities overall have character.  All black Greek organizations are based on academic success. Professor America’s advice is an opinion of a professor that has not attended an HBCU or taught at one.  He also makes a statement that “HBCUs can do better at continuously improving efficiency and reducing costs.”[17]  HBCU’s funding is not as high as PWI’s.  History has shown that HBCU’s have done a lot with little funding from the government.  I agree that HBCU’s should focus on moving up in the rankings however, the necessary funding and political backup has to be in place as well.
HBCU’s lost a devastating 14,000 students in 2011. This was due to the denial of the parent PLUS loan to be continued.[18]  This denial came at a shocker to parents along with the colleges and universities.  In 2010 and 2011 Federal departments that contracted and worked with HBCUs have seen funding reduced by more than $115 million.[19]  Programs like Work-Study and other grants have been cut by $51 million, and that amount of funding being decreased disproportionately affects HBCU students.[20]  Walter Kimbrough whom was the seventh president of Dillard University stated;

There is a fear of a Black planet, or a fear of Black intelligence.  Our colleges are repositories of Black knowledge, which some would like to ignore.  We are plagued by low endowments but also by our nation’s indifference to our service.  We prepare students for graduate and professional school.  We take first-generation students and make them career-ready.[21]

The above quote shows the belief in the effectiveness of the HBCU.  The world is full of racism and classism.  The Times or the study reflect the fact that HBCU’s bestowing as many as 40% of degrees in STEM, and educated half of the country’s blacks in health professions which are mid to high level income occupations.[22]   The statistics show that degrees from HBCU’s do not hinder the success of graduates in the job market.  African-Americans who graduate from a HBCU do better financially than Blacks who graduate from PWI’s, according to a new study by economists at Morehouse College and Howard University.[23]

CONCLUSION
HBCUs are the backbone to this country.  HBCUs provide the teachers a great number of teachers to this country.  HBCUs give the meaning to not having much but gaining everything.  The spiritual background along with the educational roots that the HBCU has planted inside the educational soil of this country has expanded beyond the thoughts of what PWI’s expected, and has surpassed the stereotypes that have been forced upon them.  Research has shown the many contributing factors of the HBCU to this countries rise and the HBCU will continue to contribute whether it’s 105 HBCU’s or just 1 HBCU standing.

Please give your insight on this article which I have took the time to research to make you all aware of the STATS.... Conversation is KEY!

Jian Feng Took the Phrase 'God Don't Like Ugly' to A Whole Other Level!!! #HaveASeatSunday

I saw this article a minute ago and thought it was ridiculously funny, but also quite thought provoking.  It has been making its way around the web and yesterday, I brought it up to my family and they went HAM AND CHEESE debating about it.  So, I wanted to get you alls opinions.

For those who are unfamiliar, a Chinese man, Jian Feng sued his wife after she gave birth to what he called an "ugly" baby girl, claiming that his wife must have cheated on him.  He got a paternity test and found out that the children were in fact his, and that his kids actually favored his wife prior to her having $62,000 worth of surgery that he knew nothing about.

Jian Feng won the lawsuit based on his claim that his wife married him under false pretenses because she never told him about her face changing plastic surgery.  The judge found his claims valid and awarded Feng $75,000 for damages.

Was Feng's wife wrong for not sharing her before and after pictures with her husband prior to marriage?

Would you get a paternity test if you had a beautiful spouse but the kids came out "ugly"?

Whose side would you be on if you were the judge?

Who should #HaveASeat on this Sunday?

MUSIC MONDAY (Local Artist Alert)

Myke Eazy (Michael Sims) has been writing and singing music since the age of nine. His whole family were vocalists and enjoyed music, so a house full of singing didn’t seem that special to him. So it was not until he reached college where he realized just how much promise his own musical talent held for him. He recently penned his first song for his new album entitled "Love" and posted the track on Twitter and Facebook. He soon had over 15k twitter followers and a new, fast-growing fan base.
Michael’s music has a rich blend of beats, harmony and soul that takes his R&B sound to a new level. His inspiration comes from music icons Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Tank, Kanye West and Frank Ocean. “My art is unique, fresh, and new. It isn't trying to be like anything else out there right now so comparison is futile. My sound is all my own and though my brand is still in its formation, it is growing thanks to people who appreciate the music,” said Eazy.
“I am very excited to bring to you a fresh sound and a new brand! The first project is entitled "I Can Do Anything" and is available on iTunes as well as many other online music stores! I am an advocate of encouraging others that they too can do anything that they set their minds too!” Eazy added.

HUMBLE AWARD: Willie Porter Jr. (The Beginning of Greatness)

In this edition of Culture Shock we would like to give the Humble Award to a special Artist Willie Porter Jr.  The Humble Award is given to people in our community that are making an impact on our society.  Many we may know, but some are under the radar.  I would like to take the time out to thank Willie Porter Jr. for his presence in the D.C., Maryland, and Virginia community where I met him, and for the positive effect that he has on the people that come in contact with him.  I will give you all some background on Willie Porter Jr.

Full Name: Willie Porter Jr.

D.O.B: June, 1990

Born in: Flint, Michigan

Residence Now: Richmond, VA

I asked Mr. Porter when did he recognize his creative gift?

Willie Porter:  "I didn't recognize my creative gift. People I love & respect recognized it for me and I felt I owed it to them and myself to take it seriously. My high school art teacher gave me that push that I needed. My senior year of high school, I had no intention of going to college until about April. When my art teacher got on me to create a portfolio and submit it to vcu. She told me that if I applied that she'd write my letter of recommendation and guide me through the process. Needless to say, I got accepted into their school of arts and never looked back. Although I didn't finish my schooling there, that experience with my teacher was the spark I needed to appreciate my gift."

I asked Mr. Porter how will he use his gift to inspire the WORLD?

Willie Porter: "I can't speak of all the things God will allow me to do to inspire the world in days to come, but I can tell you about a plan I have that I feel will greatly impact a city. I'm moving to Richmond, Va tomorrow morning. I quit my job two weeks ago. I plan to paint and tattoo to cover my rent. While I have no doubts that I'm going to get it done, I thought over and over about how I could connect with Richmond. Sure I know people who I attended VCU (Virginia Common Wealth University) with, but how can I immediately be a presence in the art scene. While I've made a name for myself in Fredericksburg, Va that buzz won't keep me afloat in Richmond, Va.

One day as I was riding through Richmond with my girl I kept thinking and thinking. Looking around at all the students, business men/women, and countless homeless ppl. Where do I start as far as making my mark. Then it hit me and I couldn't stop smiling. I have to start from the bottom. Once I unpack my things tomorrow, I'm putting the cardboard boxes to use. I'm painting as many pieces of cardboard that I can, with whatever comes to mind. Whether it be portraits, animals, whatever. Then I'm gonna walk the city and hand them to bums. Not only is it free promotion for me, but it'll bring more attention and potentially more money to them. Now what they do with it has nothing to do with me. I'm gonna give the choice of either selling my paintings and let them keep the money, or keeping the paintings. Hopefully them holding on to something that is typically found in a home will inspire them to end up in a home and not on the street. If they do sell what I give them, then I'll bring them more. Everyone sees bums. Everyday. I know I'd stop and notice a bum holding art. I have many more ideas when it comes to the homeless, but that's all I'll share for now."

Mr. Porter has demonstrated faith, perseverance, and trust way possible.  I commend this brother for his achievements and I pray for his future success.  Once again to a humble gentleman we present WILLIE PORTER JR. with the HUMBLE AWARD.  Check out a couple of pieces of Willie Porter Jr's artwork below.  Leave comments and responses.  His contact information for painting inquires is: WillEPorter810@aol.com

Permit to Parent...Should You Have to Get A Permit to Have Children?

In light of several cases of recent child neglect, abuse and just downright bad parenting, I wanted to pose the question, "Should there be preliminary screenings or restrictions placed on people who wish to become parents, especially those with prior convictions or diagnosed psychological illnesses?"

Here we see Jessica Howell (to the left), a 25 year old mother, who was dating (Jordan Prince) a known registered sex offender, whom she allegedly gave consent to rape and kill her 4 month old baby and on December 3rd of last year, he did just that.  Recently, Jordan (boyfriend of mother) was indicted on counts of first degree murder and Jessica (the mother) on counts of second degree murder.
My heart hurts for what that 4 month old, voiceless child must have went through and what so many other young children like her go through everyday.  Children who cannot speak for themselves and cannot fight back.  Children who are expected to be protected by their parents, but instead are placed in harms way.   Having children should be a gift from God, not to be taken lightly, but it seems more and more often, we see cases of horrific evil senseless adults having children and misusing their power as parents.  How could anyone as demonic and sick as this woman be allowed to parent a child, let alone walk the streets, period?  Unfortunately, this is not as uncommon as one may think.  Every day, more than four children die at the hands of child abusers, 80% under the age of four.  So I ask again,  "Should there be preliminary screenings or restrictions placed on people who wish to become parents, especially people with prior convictions or diagnosed psychological issues?"   What do you think?

Also, I dont want to end this post without saying that even if you could never imagine allowing someone to do this to your child, please take a second to understand that child abuse comes in many forms, some of which have become common among young parents and they are as follows:

1. Dressing your child in inappropriate attire
2. Allowing children to watch overtly sexual or overly violent shows/movies
3. Telling your children to dance inappropriately for their age
4. Allowing children in the room as you and your partner have sexual intercourse
5. Leaving your child with unfit sitters and/or people you do not know well
6. Allowing your children to drink alcoholic beverages, smoke or do drugs

These are just to name a few.  It is never too late to learn how to become an effective and knowledgeable parent.  Please use the utmost discernment when deciding to bring others around your children and in deciding what is right and wrong for a child's normal/natural development.  What you may deem okay, may be child neglect or abuse.  There are resources available to you (i.e.Skillful ParentingParent Education Program, etc.)  If you suspect ANY form of child abuse is going on, please call 1-800-4-A-CHILD (1-800-422-4453) IT IS YOUR BUSINESS, IT IS YOUR DUTY!
